Service Schedule
MONTHLY: You should check your extinguishers visually for signs of damage, use (tampers seals intact, gauges in green) and that they are in the correct position.
ANNUALLY: Basic Service. Similar to an MOT on a car this checks the extinguisher is in safe working condition with no damage or use but in more detail than a monthly check
5 YEARLY: Extended Service. Similar to a full service on a car this tests the extinguisher by discharge, strips it down for full internal & external examination and refills with fresh extinguishing agent. Certain key aspects of extinguisher safety & functionality can only be checked this way. (NOTE - does not apply to CO2 extinguishers)
10 YEARLY: Overhaul. For CO2 extinguishers only. Unlike other types these are high pressure cylinders (55Bar/770psi) & subject to Pressure Vessel Safety Legislation, The extinguisher is emptied, the valve scrapped, cylinder pressure tested for integrity, repainted, a new valve fitted and refilled with CO2.
ALL EXTINGUISHERS require a suitable system of maintenance to meet fire safety legislation. Even those sold as "service free" such as the Kevlar P50 extinguisher still require an annual inspection & pressure gauge function test carried out by the user to comply with legislation & the manufacturer's own maintenance regime. If you have these when were yours last inspected and the inspection label completed?
